Economic transformation & current business climate

Historically largely rural or horticultural, especially around Pukekohe and Franklin, the region’s fertile soils supported market gardens, farms, and small-town economies. Pukekohe remains known for horticulture, supplying produce to the Auckland region.

Recent economic data (e.g. from a 2022 local review of Franklin/Pukekohe area) shows that while the population and labour-force participation are healthy, the area has relatively fewer “knowledge-intensive” industries compared with central Auckland. Many residents commute to larger employment centres for work.

In the broader South Auckland region, employment precincts have seen growth especially in industrial employment, manufacturing, transport/warehousing, wholesale trade, along with increases in office-based employment and retail/hospitality over the past two decades.

South-West Auckland contributes to the broader region’s role as New Zealand’s economic engine — leveraging its mix of residential base, industry, logistics, agriculture and access to transport corridors for growth.

Opportunities

The combination of agriculture/ horticulture (especially around Pukekohe/Franklin), industrial zones, and growing residential catchments make the area well-suited for businesses serving food supply, logistics, manufacturing support, and trade.

There is scope for development of agritech, value-added food processing, warehousing & distribution,  especially given proximity to the Auckland market and transport infrastructure.

There are significant opportunities locally within the small business sector with positive signs of growth, bridging rural/urban resource supply (e.g. produce, logistics) to meet growing demand.
