Economic evolution to present

Increased settlement and the growing capital city rapidly transformed the valley, leading to industrial and suburban development throughout the 20th century, especially in Lower Hutt, which became a major manufacturing centre.

Wairarapa takes its name from Wai-rarapa, “glistening waters,” traditionally belonging to Rangitāne, later shared with Ngāti Kahungunu. Its wide plains supported gardening, access to coastal food sources, and trade networks. European settlement in the mid-1800s established large sheep stations, making the region a major pastoral hub.

Today, the Hutt Valley economy is driven by advanced manufacturing, professional services, technology, defence (Trentham), and logistics related to Wellington’s urban growth. Lower Hutt has invested in science and innovation, including health technology and engineering. Upper Hutt supports the defence sector, outdoor recreation, and small-scale industry.

Wairarapa remains rooted in agriculture, viticulture, and forestry. The wine industry in Martinborough has become internationally recognised, boosting hospitality and tourism. Masterton maintains its role as a regional service centre, while lifestyle migration from Wellington is driving residential expansion and local spending.

Both regions share growing opportunities in tourism, food production, clean-tech, and Māori-led enterprise, while also facing the challenges of infrastructure demand, housing pressure, and climate resilience.
