Contemporary economy & demographic context

As of 2023, Northland’s population is ~194,000, of which ~37 % identify as Māori one of the highest regional Māori proportions in the country.  The region remains largely rural; its economy depends heavily on pastoral farming, horticulture (avocados, kumara, citrus), fishing, forestry, aquaculture, and related processing.

Manufacturing, marine-related industries, and services contribute alongside growing sectors such as tourism, driven by Northland’s natural coastline, kauri forests (e.g. Waipoua Forest), heritage sites (including the Treaty Grounds at Waitangi / Bay of Islands), and subtropical environment.

Recent economic indicators show challenges: in 2025 the region recorded one of the highest unemployment rates nationally, and housing and infrastructure remain issues in many rural communities.  At the same time, a regional development strategy, the Tai Tokerau Northland Economic Action Plan, has mobilized over 60 initiatives to support economic diversification, infrastructure improvement and uplift for communities.

Significance & Outlook

Northland combines strong Māori heritage, rich natural resources, and rural-coastal character, with opportunities in agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, tourism, and value-added production. Addressing persistent socioeconomic challenges, unemployment, skills, infrastructure, and housing, remains critical for unlocking the region’s long-term potential.

What Prime Stategies Clients Say

  • “This was a challenge that you were both up for and up to from my perspective. I genuinely appreciate your time and perspectives that have helped me move forward personally and with the business.

I absolutely acknowledge that it’s a great process and one that does help drive a business forward. The focus on mine and my partners personal goals at the start was primo and the monthly management meetings were good.

Having your weekly agenda, discussion points and action items was very helpful to keep moving forward. Your documented lists were great to review. Your personal integrity and energy is a tonic and your encouragement too has been so very valuable to help me shift from the place I was at.”
