Tasmania, formerly known as Van Diemen’s Land, saw early growth in population with the arrival of the Europeans in 1803, setting up as penal colony. Thus began the likes of early livelihoods centred around convict labour, timber, sealing and mining, leveraging the island’s rich natural resources. 

The most recent estimate puts Tasmania’s population at roughly 576,000 people (mid-2024/early 2025). 

In terms of ancestry/ethnic background (2021 Census): the largest groups are those reporting English, Australian, Irish, Scottish and German ancestry. Approximately 5.4 % of residents identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, higher than the national average. 

What this means for the state: Tasmania remains Australia’s smallest and most lightly populated state.

As of 2024, Tasmania’s economy reached a record Gross State Product (GSP) of AUD 40.6 billion, growing 1.4% over the previous year. Unemployment remains among the lowest in recent years. 

Today, the state economy remains rooted in agriculture, aquaculture, forestry, mining, and seafood, supported by Tasmania’s natural environment.  Food production, including fruit, vegetables, seafood and specialty produce, continues to be a significant export base. 

Tourism and SMB services have grown substantially, with tourism supporting tens of thousands of jobs and contributing a substantial share of economic value. 

Manufacturing and processing, especially value-added food processing, forestry products, and mineral processing, remain relevant.
